RIGA, Jan 5, BNS - Latvia marks the 100th anniversary of the Christmas Battles today. The Christmas Battles were fought during World War I from January 5 to January 11, 1917. The Russian army's plan was to breach German defenses and move on along River Lielupe to capture Jelgava. Two Latvian brigades, which during the Christmas Battles were united into a division, spearheaded the Russian army's attack using the tactic of surprise as there was no artillery support.
