Latvia makes strides to grant Latvian citizenship to non-citizens’ children

There are approximately 7,000 non-Latvia citizens under the age of 18 dwelling in Latvia. The president of Latvia, Raimonds Vejonis, has created a Social Cohesion Working Group this year tasked with, among other things, amendment of Latvian legislation so that, in the future, the children along with all others born here could be automatically granted Latvian citizenship. Even though Latvia celebrated 25 years of independence this year, there were 32 children registered as Latvian non-citizens in the first half of 2016.
