RIGA - Latvia is interested in developing closer economic contacts with Vietnam, which is one of the leading economies in South East Asia, as the Foreign Ministry's State Secretary Andris Pelss said at a meeting with Vietnamese Ambassador to Latvia Phan Dang Duong today.

Pelss thanked the ambassador, who had arrived at the Foreign Ministry on a farewell visit, for his contribution to the strengthening of bilateral relations between Latvia and Vietnam, while expressing regret that the intensity of cooperation had been severely affected by restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, as the Foreign Ministry informed LETA.

During the meeting, Pelss emphasized the need to support Ukraine in international organizations, as well as informed the ambassador about Latvia's presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

Pelss invited a delegation of the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry to visit Latvia for political consultations. The ambassador, for his part, extended an invitation for senior Latvian officials to visit Vietnam.

The officials also discussed the issues of economic cooperation. Cooperation between the European Union and Vietnam, in the EU-ASEAN format, and in international organizations was also discussed.

The ambassador resides in Stockholm, the Kingdom of Sweden.
