RIGA - Last year, Latvia imported 38.5 million fresh chicken eggs worth EUR 2.4 million from Ukraine, which makes up 20.2 percent of the total imports of fresh chicken eggs in 2021, according to the Central Statistical Bureau's preliminary data.
In 2021, Latvia imported a total of 190.8 million chicken eggs worth EUR 13.1 million. Ukraine was the second largest egg exporter to Latvia.
Most eggs were imported to Latvia from Lithuania last year - 114.7 million eggs for EUR 8 million euros, which makes up 60.1 percent of the total import of chicken eggs. Latvia also imported eggs from Finland, Poland, Estonia, Germany and France.
At the same time, Latvian chicken egg exports are about twice as high as imports. Last year, Latvia exported 385.8 million eggs worth EUR 26.3 million, mainly to Lithuania, Estonia and the Czech Republic.
According to the Statistical Bureau's data, this past March the average price of a pack of ten eggs in Latvia was EUR 1.88, while in 2021 it ranged from EUR 1.65 in September to EUR 1.86 in November.
In 2021, 825.6 million eggs were produced in Latvia, which is 23.8 million eggs or 3 percent more than in 2020.
