RIGA - Latvia is looking to procure medicines jointly with Cyprus and Malta, Health Minister Hosams Abu Meri (New Unity) said in an interview to TV3 channel.

He said that work on that matter has been going on since last fall. Officials from the three countries are expected to meet with representatives of the pharmaceutical industry in Poland soon.

Joint procurement of antibiotics is also on the table, as well as procurement of cancer medicines.

The health minister voiced hope that the pharmaceutical industry would be forthcoming and give smaller countries as much medicines as they need. At the moment, the medicines producers focus primarily on the big countries, which pay more, and "gives away" what is left to the small ones.
