MADRID - Latvia had to work quite seriously for adoption of certain decisions to strengthen its security ahead of NATO Summit, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (New Unity) told LETA.

According to the minister, Latvia had to fight over what the political decisions will be regarding the deployment of a brigade on Latvian soil, as well as rapid reaction forces in the country if there is such a need.

"This time, Latvia was one of those countries that was insisting very intently and not letting go, until last Friday, disagreeing with several documents and not allowing them to move forward until a decision adequate for our security was achieved," said the foreign minister.

According to unofficial information, the Baltic states were the last to block the summit agreement plans in order to reach decisions important to their security, but Latvia remained the last in these negotiations to insist on improvements until compromises were reached.
