RIGA - Latvia was on Tuesday elected to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for two years - 2026 and 2027 - by 178 votes.

To become a non-permanent member, Latvia needed the support of two-thirds of the UN member states.

Latvia ran for a non-permanent seat on the UNSC and remained the only candidate from the Eastern European group. Until January 31, Latvia was in competition with Montenegro, but Montenegro decided to withdraw its candidacy.

The countries running for non-permanent seats on the UNSC this year included Latvia from the Eastern Europe group, Congo and Liberia from the Africa group, Colombia from the Latin America and Caribbean group and Bahrain from the Asia-Pacific group.

On the UNSC, Latvia has pledged to advocate cooperation among UN member states, regional organizations and civil society in order to strengthen resilience, promote lasting peace and security, achieve sustainable development and leave no one behind.

Latvia believes that conflict prevention, the protection of civilians in armed conflicts and a peaceful settlement of disputes should remain a top priority for the UN, including through mediation and peacekeeping.

Latvia advocates greater accountability, coherence and transparency of the UNSC. Latvia supports reforms of the UNSC to increase its effectiveness in addressing international problems.

Latvia defends the international legal order. Latvia supports calling to account those who violate international law and the fight against impunity as preconditions for a just and lasting peace.

Latvia recognizes the urgent need for responsible action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Building long-term resilience is particularly important in tackling the growing climate crisis and rising sea levels.

Latvia will continue to work within the multilateral framework to strengthen solidarity and joint efforts in support of vulnerable groups and developing countries affected by political and social tensions, poverty, environmental challenges and water shortages.

Latvia, a long-standing advocate of gender equality, women's education and empowerment, recognizes the crucial role of the Women, Peace and Security initiative in ensuring international peace and sustainable development. Latvia will continue to advocate for the protection of women's rights, including by providing support to victims of sexual abuse in armed conflicts.

Latvia believes that bridging the digital divide between countries, urban and rural areas, gender and age groups is the key to resilience and opportunity for all. Latvia will continue to be actively engaged in addressing security issues in the digital and information space, including in the field of artificial intelligence.
