RIGA - The Chapter of Orders at an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday unanimously decided to bestow the Order of Viesturs First Class on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for an unwavering defense of his state and country, LETA was told at the Latvian president's office.

"The Order of Viesturs - Latvia's highest state award - has been bestowed on the Ukrainian president honoring Volodymyr Zelensky's personal valor and leadership in defending common European values by leading the heroic fight of the whole Ukrainian nation against Russia's aggression," said Sarmite Elerte, Chancellor of the Chapter of Orders.

Under the Latvian law, the Order of Viesturs can be awarded to foreign heads of state for particularly notable work in shaping international relations.
