In an attempt to protect what has widely been termed by analysts as Latvia’s “information space,” politicians are planning to create a Russian-language television channel for the region Latgale, the Latvian television show De Facto reported on Sunday.
While regulations of the current Russian media channels bring up questions of free speech, the idea to establish a local Russian speaking television channel has more positive connotations, bringing better coverage to areas like Latgale, that are all too often under reported in the Latvian media.
