VILNIUS - As part of the commemorations marking 25 years since the events of Jan .13, 1991 (now known as the Day of the Defenders) non-governmental patriotic organizations on Wednesday awarded Lithuania’s first post-independence leader Vytautas Landsbergis with a Freedom Sign.
He received the award a quarter of a century after he led his country in their stand against Soviet tanks rolling into Lithuania, which were part of the Soviet Union’s attempt in Jan. 1991 to take back control from the newly independent Baltic states.
