TALLINN – An entry by KOKO Architects has won a competition for the architectural design of Tallinn's Central Market organized by the market's new owner, Astri Grupp.

The aim of the architectural competition was to get the best solution for the area of the Central Market. The entries had to suggest a layout for the planning area, the layout and design of roads and squares as well as the functional solution of the building of the market, Astri Grupp said.

Entries were filed in the competition by architecture bureaus Kadarik, Tuur. Arhitektid, KAMP Architects, and KOKO Architects.

The jury named a very good idea and proportion of the general public space, good outlines and use of public roads and squares and their proportional fitting in with the buildings planned to be built in the area as assets of the winning entry.

"This is a strong solution in terms of urban design which is the most comprehensive architecturally. The work by KOKO Architects also possesses very well thought-out stageability, with the market to be able to function successfully also during the period of construction. The development will also create a strong community area, which is absent at present," Astri Kinnisvara OU board member Tarmo Kleimann said in a press release.

Simultaneously with the architectural competition the government of the city district of Central Tallinn held a public vote to establish the most popular design.

The public vote was won by the entry by Kadarik, Tuur. Arhitektid, which received a monetary prize from the city.

The first stage of the new Central Market, the new building of the Central Market, is to be completed by 2023.
