TALLINN - Kihnu Veeteed, the only participant in the negotiated procurement for finding an operator for the ferry route between Montu in Estonia and Ventspils in Latvia, has requested an extension for submitting its application, the regional Meie Maa reported.

A procurement committee convened at the Saaremaa rural municipality government on Aug. 19 to discuss whether or not to defer the deadline for applications.

"The initial deadline for submitting bids was at 10 a.m. on Aug. 23," procurement specialist Evelin Mesila said, adding that the committee decided to grant Kihnu Veeteed, the only potential operator of the Monty-Ventspils ferry route, the extension it had requested and to set a new deadline for Sept. 30.

As a result of a successful procurement, the winner, AS Kihnu Veeteed, will be awarded a five-year contract for operating the Montu-Ventspils ferry route. The contracting authority expects that regular services will be provided at least three times a week during a contractual period from June 1 to August 31 every year. The exact period, timetable and volume shall be specified in the contract.

The Montu-Ventspils route was popular among Estonians, Latvians as well as foreign tourists in 2005-2008. Since 2017, attempts have been made to relaunch the route. At the time, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications was also essentially prepared to support the relaunch.
