TALLINN - Estonian President Alar Karis praised Germany for its leading role in European security during a meeting with his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at Kadriorg Palace in Tallinn on Thursday.

"Estonia and Germany share close historical and cultural ties, common values, and a mutual responsibility. We are steadfast allies in NATO and committed partners in the European Union," said Karis. "We stand together with Ukraine in its fight for freedom and national self-determination. We are also jointly seeking paths to peace in other global crisis hotspots, because we know that only unity, solidarity, and adherence to principles can maintain global balance."

"I commended Germany for its contribution to the defense of NATO's eastern flank, as well as for its support for Ukraine and its leadership role in European security. In addition to security matters, we also discussed economic cooperation in the defense industry and education sectors," the head of state said.

In addition to the meeting at Kadriorg, President Alar Karis also attended a reception for the Day of German Unity at the German ambassador's residence on Thursday, where he delivered a speech.

At the invitation of President Alar Karis, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is in Tallinn on Thursday and Friday to attend a meeting of the Arraiolos Group, which includes the heads of state of ten EU member states. The agenda for the two-day meeting covers the growing role of artificial intelligence in society and the international security situation.
