VILNIUS – Lithuanian MEP Stasys Jakeliunas, representing the ruling Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, says he will not support fellow party member Virginijus Sinkevicius' nomination for a European Commissioner.

"I can only confirm (I will not support him) but I will not provide any detailed comment yet," Jakeliunas told BNS Lithuania.

The Kauno Diena daily was the first to report on Jakeliunas' position.

Jakeliunas is delegated to the EP by the LFGU, and Sinkevicius became the top candidate to represent Lithuanian at the European Commission after the party's political group in the Seimas voiced its support to Sinkevicius.

Sinkevicius has already been endorsed by the Lithuanian government and president and is still due to be confirmed by the European Parliament. The new European Commission is scheduled to start working in November.

Jakeliunas is a member of the Greens/EFA group.

Sinkevicius might become the only EP member representing the greens if the European Greens Party agrees to have Sinkevicius as its representative.
