RIGA - Intergovernmental cooperation between Latvia and Russia in the economic, scientific-technical, humanitarian and cultural fields has been suspended.

On Thursday, the government decided to suspend the Cabinet of Ministers' regulation "On the agreement between the Government of the Republic of Latvia and the Government of the Russian Federation on the establishment of an intergovernmental commission in the fields of economic, scientific-technical, humanitarian and cultural cooperation".

As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoF) explained, according to modern international law, any country has the right to take measures against a country that violates its obligations to the international community as a whole, in order to ensure the prevention of the violation and reparations in the interests of the victimized country.

Thus, the international community, including Latvia, has the obligation to work together, as well as the right to take countermeasures, in order to motivate Russia to stop violations of international law and fully compensate for the violations already committed.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will submit a notification to the Russian side about the suspension of the agreement.
