RIGA - A new public administration institution - the Secretariat of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union - will be created to ensure the success of the Latvia's Presidency in 2028, with 15 posts to be created, the government decided on Tuesday.
The secretariat will exist for a certain period of time - until the completion of the Presidency coordination work on June 30, 2029.
The secretariat will be under the authority of the foreign minister and will ensure national coordination between public administration institutions during the preparations and the duration of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
At a meeting organized by the Foreign Ministry with representatives of other ministries in September last year on the experience of the 2015 Presidency and lessons learned in preparation for the 2028 Presidency, participants expressed support for a similar centralized approach, including with regard to the establishment of the Presidency Secretariat.
Ten fixed-term posts are planned for the Secretariat for next year.
The Director of the Secretariat will be a civil servant selected in a tender.
