RIGA - On Friday, ahead of the Ligo Midsummer night holidays, there was a sharp increase in the number of drunk drivers detained on Latvia's roads, LETA was informed by the State Police.

23 drunk drivers were detained on Latvia's roads yesterday, which is about two-times more than on a usually Friday.

As reported, with Latvia celebrating the Ligo! or Midsummer holidays this weekend, police will be on high-alert on Latvia's roads, LETA was told by State Police Traffic Safety Department Chief Normunds Krapsis.

Police will remain on high-alert until Monday morning.

Police will be inspecting drivers throughout the country to maintain order on Latvia's roads and make sure they are not sitting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol.
