In area of internal security, biggest threat is possible acts of sabotage - interior minister

RIGA - The biggest threat in the area of internal security is possible acts of sabotage, said Minister of the Interior Rihards Kozlovskis (New Unity) on Latvian Television this morning.

The politician believes that this year in Latvia will largely be marked by the elections and pre-election activities, which will create certain tensions when it is important for all those involved to maintain their common sense.

Regarding the fence on Latvia's eastern border, the Minister reminded that it was basically complete, but that the establishment of patrol paths and the implementation of engineering solutions still needed to be completed.

Kozlovskis admitted that fences are often damaged, for example, last year there were more than 200 such cases. This often happens with the support of the Belarusian authorities.

The Minister added that the pressure of illegal migration from Belarus on Latvia's eastern border has eased somewhat during the winter, but that it was too early to say how far-reaching the changes would be.
