RIGA - The European Union (EU) and NATO must agree on Thursday on the strongest possible sanctions against Russia, including disconnection from the SWIFT international payment system, otherwise more serious consequences or even disaster by Russia can be expected, Minister of Defense Artis Pabriks (For Development) said today.

However, Reuters news agency reports that the European Union (EU) is unlikely to exclude Russia from SWIFT in connection with Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

Russia's expulsion from SWIFT is supported by Baltic diplomats, and Czech President Milos Zeman has also backed the move in the new sanctions package, but Reuters said other countries are not yet ready for the move.
