RIGA - From today to November 17, Health Minister Hosams Abu Meri (New Unity) will visit Saudi Arabia, where he will participate in an international conference on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the Health Ministry informed LETA.

Abu Meri will deliver a speech highlighting Latvia's progress and achievements in AMR control in 2024, as well as participate in a panel discussion on capacity building and public awareness on AMR through innovative training and education approaches in the human health, agriculture and animal sectors.

"Latvia is one of the most successful countries in the fight against antimicrobial resistance, ranking tenth among EU and EEA countries with the lowest antibiotic consumption in the outpatient sector, ahead of Estonia and Lithuania - I am pleased that the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes Latvia's work and invites me to share my experience," said Abu Meri.

He believes that Latvia's success is based on cooperation with the Baltic and Scandinavian countries, and that globally there is a need to further strengthen cooperation at government, scientific and expert level.

The minister will hold a number of bilateral meetings, including with WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge, health ministers of Saudi Arabia and other countries, in order to strengthen international cooperation in health care and promote the development and competitiveness of Latvian health tourism.

During the meetings, special attention will be paid to the quality of services provided by Latvian medical institutions to foreign patients.

According to the minister, antimicrobial resistance is known in the medical world as the "silent pandemic" and has been named by the WHO as one of the ten most dangerous threats to human health.
