RIGA - The board of Latvia's opposition Union of Greens and Farmers supports MP Janis Vitenburgs' (KPV LV) nomination for economics minister.
Greens/Farmers representative Dace Karklina told LETA that the party's board is also urging to include a parliamentary vote on Vitenburgs' appointment in the agenda of this week's Saeima meeting. In the current emergency situation, the government must have all ministers and work on economic support solution is of critical importance, Greens/Farmers believe.
Greens/Farmers also support the election of former economics minister Ralfs Nemiro (KPV LV) as chairman of the Saeima Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee, Karklina said.
"In this emergency situation it is necessary to forget about position and opposition. Greens/Farmers believe that it is necessary to work together to not only curb the spread of the coronavirus but to also prevent a steep economic slump," Greens/Farmers said in a statement.
Greens/Farmers calls on the New Conservative Party (JKP) to put aside their political ambitions and agree on work in the interests of the state and its residents.
JKP have said they would agree to back Vitenburgs' nomination for economics minister on the condition that all "heads of the group and their team of executives" are fired from their posts at the Economics Ministry. JKP also want the State Chancellery to organize a tender to appoint an experienced and reputable professional as the ministry's state secretary.
All coalition partners, excluding JKP, have supported Vitenburgs' nomination.
Nemiro resigned as economics minister after his security clearance allowing to access state secrets was revoked. He has since resumed work as an MP. KPV LV party has nominated Vitenburgs for the vacant post of economics minister.
