RIGA - The government today supported reorganization of the Latvian Maritime Academy by merging it with Riga Technical University (RTU).

The objective of the reorganization of the Maritime Academy is to maintain an autonomous maritime education system, as well as continue optimization of the higher education system as the academy will become a structural unit of RTU.

After the reorganization, RTU will take over the academy's curricula, employment relations with the academy's staff, and the academy's obligations.

The Education and Science Ministry explains that integration of the Maritime Academy in RTU will achieve a more rational use of the existing resources, and this solution will further contribute to the development of maritime education, especially in terms of financing for development and investment projects.

Reorganization of the Maritime Academy is part of the Education Development Guidelines for 2021-2027.

The Education and Culture Ministry's representative Dmitrijs Stepanovs explained earlier that, even after joining RTU, the Maritime Academy would remain an autonomous structural unit with its own charter.
