According to the amendments to the government regulations drafted by the Education and Science Ministry, as of September 1, 2020, lecturers' minimum monthly rate of pay will be EUR 805. Other rates of pay will be calculated based on this minimum rate.
The ministry informed that under the amended regulations, the minimum monthly rate of pay has been set at EUR 1,569 for professors, EUR 1,005 for docents, EUR 805 for lecturers and EUR 641 for assistants whose rates of pay are affected by the costs of budget-funded places in study programs.
Rates of pay will also be increased for other employees of Latvia's universities and colleges.
According to information provided by Education and Science Ministry, the updated costs of budget-funded places in study programs and recalculation of salaries will affect 593 university professors, 507 associate professors, 887 docents, 687 lecturers and 327 assistants, as well as 62 college docents, 184 lecturers and 65 assistants working full or part time in these higher education institutions.
The pay rise will cost EUR 383,777 this year, and EUR 1,151, 328 in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
The Education and Science Ministry said that this year funding for the pay rise will be provided from the ministry's 2020 budget by reallocating money from other programs. In the following years, the source of funding will have to be provided in the process of drafting Latvia's annual and medium-term budgets.
