RIGA - The government coalition agreed on Monday to extend the duration of unemployment benefits that end during the current Covid-19 crisis, Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) told journalists after the weekly coalition cooperation meeting.

The prime minister also thanked the public for complying with the restrictions and thus helping to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Karins stressed that the government is not only looking at the epidemiological aspects of the crisis but is also looking for ways to stimulate the economy and cope with the economic slump caused by Covid-19.

"Our goal is to emerge from the crisis stronger," Karins said.
