Government approves bill on defense cooperation between Latvia and US

The government at a closed sitting today passed a bill on an intergovernmental agreement providing for defense cooperation between Latvia and the United States. The text of the agreement has not been made public. The Defense Ministry will be coordinating the implementation of the agreement under the bill. The draft legislation has yet to be approved by Saeima, Latvian Parliament. Defense Ministry spokeswoman Anete Gneze told BNS that currently the status of U.S. and other NATO troops in Latvia is governed by the NATO Status of Forces Agreement, which was signed in 1951.
