RIGA - Germany is taking on increasing responsibility for security, Saeima European Affairs Committee Chairman Andris Spruds (Progressives) told LETA after a meeting with German Ambassador to Latvia Christian Helt on Wednesday.
During the meeting, Spruds and Helt discussed economic cooperation between Latvia and Germany in the context of the current geopolitical and energy challenges, as well as security in Latvia and in the region.
Germany is playing an increasingly important role in this regard, said Spruds. Since last February, when German Chancellor Olaf Scholz delivered the Zeitenwende speech at the Bundestag, not only fundamental political changes have taken place, but Germany's foreign policy identity has also changed.
Spruds and Helt also discussed Europe's progress in the field of security, sanctions on Russia, and energy independence.
