MUNICH - German police said Thursday they have arrested two men suspected of acting as foreign agents following a routine traffic check, DPA reports.
The suspects, a 45-year-old Latvian national and a 43-year-old Ukrainian national, were taken into custody on April 12 on the A6 motorway near Neuendettelsau in Bavaria, the state criminal police office in Munich said.
Authorities believe the pair were acting "on behalf of an organization or institution outside Germany," police said, but did not provide further details.
Prosecutors are investigating them on suspicion of acting as agents for sabotage purposes, as well as obtaining forged identification documents.
During a search of their vehicle, officers seized several suspicious items, including the forged documents, cameras, a drone, GPS trackers, radio equipment and multiple mobile phones with SIM cards.
The two men, who have no permanent residence in Germany, were travelling in the direction of the Czech border at the time of their arrest.
Both suspects are in pre-trial detention.
