TALLINN - German Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets stationed at the Amari air base in northwestern Estonia as part of NATO's Baltic air policing mission will perform training flights in Estonian airspace this week.
The jets will fly over southwestern, southern and central Estonia in areas designated for low-altitude flying and not lower than 152 meters between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday and Saturday, spokespeople for the defense headquarters in Tallinn said.
It is possible that the planes will fly over settlements or individual farms, but they will try to avoid populated areas if possible.
NATO member states have allocated specific areas of their airspace for the training and exercises of the air force, including low-altitude flights. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have also allocated specific regions of their airspace for carrying out low-altitude flights.
The flights are performed in conformity with Estonian law and in agreement with the Estonian Transport Administration and Estonian Air Navigation Services.
The Baltic air policing mission is part of the NATO Smart Defense concept, the aim of which is to save the resources of the member states of the alliance by contributing together to different capabilities. The jets performing the mission are based at Amari air base in Estonia and Siauliai air base in Lithuania.
