VILNIUS – Darius Gaidys, Ambassador-at-Large for Digital Affairs, has been proposed as Lithuania’s first ambassador to Singapore.

Gaidys should take up his new duties on July 11, according to a draft government decision.

In Lithuania, ambassadors are appointed by the president on nomination from the government and approval of the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Earlier this year, Lithuania opened its embassy in Singapore in a bid to strengthen ties in Eastern Asia.

The ambassador to Singapore should also be additionally accredited to Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam as well as appointed as Lithuania’s permanent representative to ASEF, Asia-Europe Foundation headquartered in Singapore. This function is currently performed from the embassy in Japan.
