TALLINN – Friday marked the first anniversary of the establishment of the Future Capability and Innovation Command (TIVJ).
The command was established to support the sustainable development of the Defence Forces' combat capability, help address identified capability gaps, and accelerate the discovery, testing, and integration of new solutions.
“The first year has helped us better understand how to most effectively approach the needs of the Defence Forces. We have created more open opportunities for collaboration between the Defence Forces and external technology and investment partners. To bring new technological possibilities closer to our units and accelerate the adoption of solutions, we are treating technology management as a military command function, supported by a network of technology managers and significantly enhanced testing processes,” said Major Ivo Peets, commander of the Future Capability and Innovation Command.
The command coordinates Defence Forces-wide activities and projects in various domains. These include unmanned systems and their countermeasures, opportunities for using artificial intelligence, data, and autonomy, as well as solutions related to the use of space-based capabilities. The command is also engaged in enhancing the Baltic defense zone, developing cooperation with the defense industry and research institutions, and involving international partners. The first year of operation has primarily been dedicated to establishing the command's operational procedures, forming a collaborative network, and launching various lines of action.
“I thank everyone who has collaborated with us during this first year, sharing their knowledge and experience, and contributing to our joint efforts. Innovation doesn't always mean we have to develop something entirely new ourselves. It is equally important to consciously leverage and enhance existing knowledge, technology, skills, and other resources, applying them to meet the needs of the Defence Forces,” Major Peets stated.
The Future Capability and Innovation Command is a structural unit of the Defence Forces, reporting directly to the Commander of the Defence Forces, with the primary mission of coordinating the sustainable growth of the Defence Forces' combat capability. The command supports existing military services and branches to ensure that identified capability gaps are closed and that development is holistic and coherent across the entire Defence Forces.
