RIGA - The Food and Veterinary Service has sent for destruction 500 kilograms of candies of Chinese origin, LETA was told at the service.

Representatives of the Food and Veterinary Service said that the decision was made because the candies contained a banned ingredient - E123, or amaranth.

The banned colorant was found while checking the labelling of the candy cargo at the Latvian border.

The cargo was not allowed into Latvia and the sweets were sent for destruction.

Amaranth, a  reddish-brown, dark red to purple colorant, is made from petroleum byproducts. In the European Union, the use of this substance in sweets production is prohibited.
