RIGA - Family physicians will now be able to appoint patients with symptoms of respiratory diseases to be tested for Covid-19, and the cost of such tests will be covered by the state, Health Minister Ilze Vinknele (For Development/For) said on Monday.
As of today, medical personnel working at several hospitals and in intensive care units will also be tested for Covid-19.
Healthcare workers who work at several hospitals or outpatient clinics pose a high risk of transmission, said Vinkele. "They have to do it to make some money and to make up for the shortage of physicians," said the minister, stressing that the situation could only be solved in the long run and by increasing funding for healthcare.
Vinkele points out that the number of people who chose to take Covid-19 tests decreased last weekend. According to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control data, 502 tests were carried out yesterday, compared to 1,089 tests last Friday.
As reported, a surgeon at Rezekne Hospital, an oncologist at Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital, as well as two dentists in Riga have been diagnosed with Covid-19.
