RIGA - Europe must keep providing even more support to Ukraine because it is in the interests of the whole civilized world, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (New Unity) said at a news conference following a meeting with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis who has arrived in Latvia on a working visit.

The meeting between the foreign ministers of Latvia and Lithuania focused on the situation in Ukraine and further steps that have to be taken to support Ukraine even more.

Both ministers praised close relations between their countries and indicated recently they had been meeting almost on a weekly basis.

The Lithuanian minister said that such meetings are not just symbolical, as the ties between the two countries are very close and they have various issues that they need to deal with together.

Commenting on the planned ban for Russian citizens to enter the European Union (EU) by crossing the Russian-Latvian border, both ministers said that the measure was necessary to restrict the influx of Russian citizens for the sake of safety.

Rinkevics indicated that the Schengen borders will still remain open and Russians, for instance, will be able to travel to Latvia by land transport from countries like Germany.
