VILNIUS – 95 million euros will be additionally allocated for teachers' wages after changes to the system of payment, Eugenijus Jovaisa, chairman of the parliamentary Committee on Education and Science, says.
"Around 32,500 teachers work in the general education system at the moment, and around 22,000 of these are staff positions. Today in Lithuania, 380 million euros are allocated for the payment of at least 32,000 teachers, and additional 95 million euros will be allocated following changes to their payment system," Jovaisa told a parliamentary hearing on the new payment model.
"The question arises as to why these millions are allocated? They are allocated for the hours when, you know, there's activity that's not been paid for so far," he said.
The Ministry of Education and Science plans to introduce the new payment model in September.
