TALLINN – Estonia's traffic register still contains over 178,000 vehicles with suspended registrations, of which nearly 98,000 are scheduled to be automatically removed on November 1.
Over the past 18 months, the Estonian Transport Administration, with public assistance, has worked to update the traffic register. One of the largest clean-ups is scheduled for this November, when 97,668 vehicles are set to be removed. Of these, 72,488 belong to categories that will become subject to the motor vehicle tax in 2027.
"In July, the Transport Administration identified vehicles with suspended registrations that have remained unchanged for seven or more years. These specific vehicles will be automatically removed from the register on November 1 unless their owners take action to update the registration," explained Märten Surva, head of the Vehicle Registration Department at the Estonian Transport Administration.
To inform owners about the automatic deregistration, the Transport Administration has begun sending direct notifications. The agency advises all customers to check and update their contact details in its e-service portal to ensure they receive these notices.
"If you wish to keep a vehicle that is important to you, you must apply to have its registration temporarily suspended to avoid automatic removal. This can be done through our e-service portal or at a service bureau and can be conveniently completed with photo evidence. It is also possible to reactivate a registration by passing a technical inspection and obtaining a valid motor vehicle liability insurance policy," Surva added.
The Administration also reminds the public that beginning in 2027, the motor vehicle tax will also apply to vehicles with suspended registrations. Furthermore, the state fee for deregistering a vehicle without a certificate of destruction will increase to 800 euros. Currently, this procedure costs 15 euros.
