TALLINN – Estonian President Alar Karis met with the heir to the British throne, William, Prince of Wales, at Windsor Castle on Wednesday.

They discussed the collaborative relationship between Estonia and the United Kingdom in culture, digital development, and science, as well as the international security situation.

"The cultural ties between Estonia and the United Kingdom are long-standing, fruitful, and built on trust," Karis said.

He highlighted that this year has featured several musical high points, particularly in celebration of the 90th birthday of Arvo Pärt, one of the world's most performed living composers. The anniversary has been jointly celebrated at the BBC Proms, the Barbican Center, and in Oxford.

During the meeting, Karis also emphasized the importance of cooperation in science, innovation, and technology between Estonia and the United Kingdom.

"For Estonia, the adoption of artificial intelligence is a national priority, as it helps strengthen the foundations of our digital state and provide smart learning tools to Estonian students and teachers," the head of state said. "However, artificial intelligence can never replace a teacher or the act of learning."

The president also shared Estonia's experience as a digital nation and discussed the role of e-services in the functioning of society.

"Estonia is a country where digital solutions have become an integral part of daily life. Our paperless governance saves an estimated two percent of GDP," Karis said, stressing that public trust is the foundation for a successful digital state.

The international security situation was also discussed. Karis thanked the United Kingdom for its strong partnership and presence in the Baltic region, including its participation in the Siil (Hedgehog) military exercise, which provided a valuable collaborative experience for both sides.

"The United Kingdom is an indispensable security partner for Europe, playing a key role in strengthening the continent's stability and defense," the head of state said.

He also encouraged the United Kingdom to continue its active contribution to Operation Eastern Sentry.

Karis also highlighted the need to increase both military and political support for Ukraine.

"Estonia believes it is crucial for allies and partners to increase pressure on Russia, including through new sanctions, and to move forward with utilizing Russia's frozen assets," he said. "The goal is to make the continuation of the war unbearable for Russia and bring them to the negotiating table."
