TALLINN - At a meeting with President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola on Monday, Estonian President Alar Karis said that efforts must be made to ensure that participation in the European Parliament elections is as broad-based as possible.

"Through the European Parliament elections, Europeans set the direction for policy choices in the European Union. It is very important to ensure that the upcoming elections engage both the old and the young, and that the topics addressed concern the future of both Estonia and Europe," Karis said at the meeting.

The president said that Estonian voters are encouraged by the experience Estonia has gained during its 20 years in the European Union.

"According to surveys, we are very pro-European, but the question always remains on how to bring Europe closer to all Estonian people," the head of state said.

Karis expressed hope that the election campaign will bring meaningful debates in which important issues such as supporting Ukraine, employment, and economic success are discussed.

Addressing the challenges related to climate change, the president mentioned that Europe can approach the green and digital transitions as a unified process.
