TALLINN – Presenting the Young Scholar Scholarships on Wednesday, Estonian President Alar Karis said that young people studying abroad are making the world a better place for us all by achieving their goals.
"Education is the surest path to economic prosperity and spiritual wealth. For individuals and for nations," Karis said according to spokespeople.
"Time and time again, those countries that make academia and innovation one of the pillars of their existence flourish among others. Those that seek talent everywhere and encourage their people to discover the world. It is not for nothing that the free movement of people is one of the founding principles of the European Union -- it is an essential part of what makes Europe successful," Karis said, handing over the scholarships to 20 young Estonians who are about to start their university studies abroad.
In his speech, the head of state referred to the humanist and scholar Erasmus from Rotterdam, who went to various parts of Europe to meet with people and discuss things with them, to obtain books and manuscripts, to study and to teach. This gave birth to a legacy that has had a great influence on European spirituality and global culture.
"This spirit of Erasmus, which makes societies immune to totalitarian tendencies, is born, among other things, through openness and travel. Interaction with different people, cultures, and ways of thinking enriches us, leading to better ideas and a better understanding of what creates true values in society," the head of state said.
The scholarships are equally funded by the Estonian government and private businesses.
