TALLINN – Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas is visiting Helsinki on Wednesday, where he is scheduled to meet with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Finance Minister Katri Kulmuni.
Ratas is also to meet with Finnish business executives and make a speech to members of the Estonian community of Helsinki at a reception marking Estonia's upcoming Independence Day.
"Finland is our close friend, with whom we will be celebrating one hundred years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between us this year," Ratas said.
"Much has changed during that time. We are both members of the European Union now and stand together for the same values. Relations between our business operators and people have become closer every year. The economic life of the two countries is inseparably linked together and Finland is home to the largest Estonian community outside our own country now. All this means that we have to have meetings with neighbors on a regular basis to discuss day-to-day issues and set goals," he added.
In the meeting with President Sauli Niinisto, the Estonian head of government is to focus on matters of European foreign and security policy and moving forward with digital cooperation. Also to be talked about is Estonia's wish to attain an observer's status in the Arctic Council.
The Estonian premier is also to meet with Finland's Finance Minister Katri Kulmuni, with whom bilateral relations and negotiations on the EU's next long-term budget will be talked about.
The visit by Ratas to Helsinki was scheduled to kick off with a lunch for investors organized by Enterprise Estonia, in which 21 industry and technology companies, investors and startups connected with Estonia or interested in investing here were to take part. The focus of the meeting was to be on improving cooperation opportunities and the companies' plans for the future.
The businesses and networks to take part in the business lunch were Elisa, ABB, Tommi Makinen Racing, Dicro, Taitokaari, Oribalt, Sammet Dampers, Finnish Business Anger Network, Odenso, Dynaplay, Multimek, Stera Technologies, InCap, Sajas Group, Nordic Trout, Fortaco, Mekonet, Foreign Investors Council in Estonia, MCF Group, Nordea, and S-Group.
In the evening, Ratas will take part in a reception to mark the 102nd anniversary of the Republic of Estonia at the Estonian embassy in Helsinki.
