Estonian parlt to convene on Monday to elect president

TALLINN - The Riigikogu will convene on Monday to elect the president of the Republic of Estonia.

An extraordinary session of the Riigikogu will take place in the Session Hall of Toompea Castle at 1 p.m. on August 30, with the election of the president on the agenda. The session is also streamed online, Riigikogu spokespeople said.

Riigikogu speaker Juri Ratas convened the session of the Riigikogu on the proposal of the president pursuant to the Constitution of the Republic of Estonia, the Riigikogu Rules of Procedure and Internal Rules Act, and the President of the Republic Election Act.  

The registration of presidential candidates starts at 9 a.m. on Thursday, August 26, and ends at 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 28.

The president is elected by secret ballot, where each member of the Riigikogu has one vote. The candidate in favor of whom a two-thirds majority of the Riigikogu, that is at least 68 MPs, vote shall be considered elected.
