RIGA - U.S. President Donald Trump will definitely play a role in attempts wreck the eurozone, Yana Toom, a member of the European Parliament from Estonia’s ruling Center Party, said in an interview with LETA.

“Trump clearly is not interested in preserving the eurozone. He does not need a rival reserve currency. He will definitely get involved in attempts to wreck this structure. I would worry less about the EU as a whole than about the eurozone to which our small countries are so closely tied,” the Estonian politician said.

Toom believes Europe is weak enough to let the eurozone collapse. She predicted that Italy, the EU’s fourth largest economy, will probably leave the eurozone. “Trump cannot be blamed for that, but he would be a fool to not take advantage of this,” Toom said.

The Estonian MEP admitted that the new U.S. president’s plans are often difficult to surmise. “I told this to Russian colleagues who were very enthusiastic that Trump had hinted something. He does not make hints, he speaks. What some take as a hint may not be a hint,” Toom said.

“What is interesting about Trump - he says to all his interlocutors what they want to hear. He wants to build good relations with everyone. For the time being, there have been few deeds behind his statements,” the MEP said.
