TALLINN – Estonian MEP Urmas Paet, vice-chair of the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee, said ahead of the planned meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin that the European Union must stand firm in defending Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"The principle of Ukraine's territorial integrity must not be violated, as it is the cornerstone of security and stability in the post-World War II era. Changing borders by military force is unacceptable," Paet said, adding that if Russia manages to change Ukraine's borders by force, then no country's border is secure.

"The sovereignty and territorial integrity of states are the cornerstones of stability in Europe and the entire world. Aggression must not be rewarded or recognized -- neither in Ukraine nor anywhere else," the MEP said.

He stressed that the EU must support Ukraine on its path towards a just and lasting peace.
