TALLINN - Estonia is about to raise the topic of Belarus in the UN Security Council, spokespeople for the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday.
"In light of the political crisis in Belarus and potential threat to international peace and security, Estonia is seeking a discussion of the situation of Belarus in the UN Security Council without delay," Estonia's Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said.
Helping to prevent conflicts and preventing their escalation is one of the duties of the Security Council. One of the main goals for Estonia as an elected member of the Security Council is to ensure abidance by international law and keep severe violations of human rights under global attention, spokespeople for the ministry said.
Reinsalu said it was paramount for the authorities of Belarus to stop violence against peaceful demonstrators, release political prisoners and hold a dialogue with their citizens aimed at holding free and fair elections.
