TALLINN - The Estonian Centre for Defense Investments (RKIK), together with the Latvian Ministry of Defense, has announced a public procurement for a large quantity of bunkers; Estonia aims to acquire up to 600 concrete bunkers for its eastern border.
Estonia and Latvia have initiated a competitive negotiated procurement procedure to find companies capable of producing large quantities of concrete bunkers and delivering them to storage areas for the Baltic Defense Line. The joint procurement has been published in the public procurement register.
"The first bunkers for the Baltic Defense Line have already been delivered, and their installation is gradually underway in Southeastern and Northeastern Estonia. The experience gained gives us the confidence to now move forward with a large-scale bunker procurement," commented Asko Kivinuk, Deputy Director of RKIK. "We are particularly pleased to be doing this together with our southern neighbors. Not insignificantly, the joint procurement also allows for cost savings due to economies of scale," Kivinuk said.
Estonia has now placed all procured obstacles in forward storage areas, the first bunkers have been installed, and work continues on the construction of an anti-tank ditch. The RKIK aims to complete the currently planned scope of the Baltic Defense Line by the end of 2027.
The Baltic Defense Line is a joint initiative by Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, aiming to halt a potential military attack by an adversary from the very first meters of the state border.
