Estonia: Opposition hands in no-confidence motion against chairman of Tallinn council

TALLINN - Opposition deputies in the council of Tallinn on Thursday filed a motion of no confidence in the chairman of the council, Kalev Kallo, who stands accused of corruption crimes.

The motion to express no confidence in Kallo, member of the board of the Center Party, has been signed by 25 members of the 79-seat council from the opposition Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL), Social Democrat and Reform Party groups.

The council will gather for an emergency meeting at 4 p.m. next Tuesday to handle the motion of no confidence.

Prosecutors on Nov. 29 last year filed charges of bribe-giving and accepting of bribes, of illegal donations, and embezzlement against Kallo, former chairman of the Center Party Edgar Savisaar, the Center Party, a former adviser to the city government and five businessmen.
