Epidemiologist concerned about unchangingly high number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals

RIGA - Last week, Covid-19 incidence in Latvia dropped 9.9 percent, but the number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals remains unchanged, said Jurijs Perevoscikovs, epidemiologist of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, at the Saeima defense, interior affairs and corruption prevention committee meeting today.

He said that the situation with the number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals in not optimistic. "The number of hospitalized patients has not declined for a month. The number of patients with severe Covid-19 symptoms has not declined for almost two months," he said.

The epidemiologist said that 73 percent of all new Covid-19 cases in Latvia are related with the new UK strain. "Patients with the UK strain develop more severe symptoms," Perevoscikovs said.

Also, he said that the number of new Covid-19 cases among people of the age of 20-29 and over the age of 80 has been observed.
