The Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI) and Mapri Ehitus OÜ have signed a contract for the design and construction of the Kõpu radar post, which will be funded by the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility. The new radar post will have a detection range extending beyond Estonia's borders in every direction.
"Developing air surveillance is crucial for enhancing Estonia's military capabilities. Installing two new radars will improve our ability to monitor airspace from the northeast and northwest, allowing for timely responses to potential aggressors," stated Steven Linkov, Western Portfolio Manager at ECDI.
Tarmo Roos, CEO of Mapri Ehitus OÜ, expressed his satisfaction with the cooperation with ECDI. "We work as one team towards a common goal. Keeping our people motivated ensures that the outcomes of projects are satisfying for all parties involved."
"The new Kõpu radar is significant development and it helps to ensure flight safety and supports maritime rescue operations. Given its location and radar range, it greatly enhances our situational awareness," emphasized Major Tõnis Pärn, Commander of the Air Surveillance Wing of Estonian Defence Forces.
In the summer of 2023, ECDI signed a contract with the defense company Thales to procure two new long-range air surveillance radars for Estonia. The Hiiumaa radar will be constructed with funds from the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility, while the radar in Northeast Estonia will be funded by resources aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The contract for the Kõpu radar post is valued at approximately 4 million euros, excluding VAT, with an estimated construction completion time of 17 months.
