RIGA - The demographic decline must be stopped, President Edgars Rinkevics stressed in an interview on Latvian Television this morning.

The President said that funds will have to be allocated for this. He explained that in a few years this decline will lead to a decline elsewhere - there will not be as many opportunities for schools and kindergartens. "In the end, after 15 or 20 years, there will be no country to build, no country to protect, no country to develop," he said.

The President agreed that not everything can be solved with benefits, but he reminded that there are benefits that have not been raised for years.

As reported, the number of newborns registered in Latvia this past November was below 1,000 for the second month in a row, according to preliminary data published by the Central Statistical Bureau.

A total of 940 newborns were registered in Latvia in November, which is 12.9 percent or 139 fewer than in the corresponding month of 2023, including 458 boys and 482 girls.

The number of newborns registered in Latvia in November 2024 was also lower than in October, when 994 newborns were registered.

In total, 11,650 newborns were registered in Latvia in the first 11 months of last year, which is 13 percent or 1,744 fewer than in the corresponding period of 2023.
