Curiosities, or What Can Be Seen on the Streets of Riga

  • 2026-05-11

Residents of central Riga witnessed a strange sight yesterday, May 10. A giant cockroach was spotted on the city streets accompanied by knights, witches, elves, and other mystical creatures.

If you happened to witness this procession, there is no need to worry: it was not a hallucination caused by an excess of spring sunshine. As it turned out, the unusual street performance was organized by volunteers and creators of the carnival and festival “Count of May”.

This unique family festival is created each year by young people from various European countries and other parts of the world. The event is free of charge and takes place throughout the day in Ziedoņdārzs Park in Riga.

According to the volunteers, the “madness” witnessed in the city center was part of a street art performance aimed at lifting the spirits of Riga residents and inviting everyone to continue the festivities on May 23 at Ziedoņdārzs Park.
