TALLINN - The Viru County Court on Wednesday sentenced a 29-year-old man to 13 years in prison for the rape of a child.

According to the indictment, the man attacked the victim in a public place and raped them. "The assault was interrupted by a passerby who noticed the child in distress and intervened. Thanks to their actions, the rapist was also apprehended as he attempted to flee the scene," explained Saskia Kask, the prosecutor who led the case.

The prosecutor noted that the accused had no prior contact with the victim. "The evidence indicates that the man did not plan the attack in advance; rather, it was an impulsive act," Kask stated.

"Attacks in public places are relatively rare. This circumstance makes the crime committed by the man convicted today even more egregious, which is why the prosecution sought a long-term prison sentence," the prosecutor said.

In Kask's view, today's verdict sends a clear signal that the justice system has zero tolerance for such crimes, a stance reflected in the lengthy sentence. "We thank the passerby who interrupted the attack, who intervened without hesitation and called the police," Kask added.

The Viru County Court handled the case in a closed session to protect the victim's interests. Therefore, the prosecutor's office cannot provide further details about the case or the proceedings.
